(république des) état insulaire de l'océan Indien (env. 1 200 îles, dont 200 habitées, menacées par la montée de la mer), au S.-O. du Sri Lanka; 298 km²; 195 000 hab. (Maldiviens); cap. Mâlé. Nature de l'état: rép. présidentielle. Monnaie: roupie. Pop. d'orig. indienne. Relig.: islam. Langue: maldivien. Les Maldives font partie des pays les moins avancés, mais la croissance avoisine les 6 %. Princ. ressources: pêche, noix de coco, coprah; tourisme.
Protectorat britannique en 1877, les Maldives ont accédé à l'indépendance en 1965. Le sultanat a été abrogé en 1968. Le prés. Gayyoom, au pouvoir dep. cette date, a déjoué plus. tentatives de coup d'état.
